It gets Win7 Better!

Went to BestBuy and replaced the DVD. Thankfully they had no problem with that. (Traffic was less forgiving. 20mph in a 25? 30 in a 45? Seriously?)
Anyway, the new disk failed as well, with BSOD rather than previous issues. After a BIOS update from HP, I am now back to the original issue.
I will now (after another chkdsk) remove whatever traces of the failed installs I can find and try one more freaking time-wasting time. And then I’ll try the clean install, and I will bet that it bricks the laptop.

Sadly, I had thought that I would eventually install on the old (this) XP desktop someday. HA!

Microsoft fails to deliver yet again. Money wasted.

Sent to MS today via Microsoft Answers website by me, a now disgruntled, former long time, customer:

Win7(64) Upgrade DVD Refuses to Upgrade Vista(64) Home Premium!  Error: Setup cannot continue due to a corrupted installation file

Seriously, why couldn’t this thing at least tell me WHAT file(s)???
64-bit to 64-bit, DVD. SHOULDN’T be an issue!

I bought the Family Pack Upgrade on Saturday (10/16/2010), so I could start with my Vista based HP Pavilion laptop (dv7) which really doesn’t have much on it. All patches are up to date.
I did have Office10 beta, but ran the remove programs on it. All patches are up to date.

I have done chkdsks on it, and even tried copying the DVD to the C drive. Mostly I get the “Setup cannot continue due to a corrupted installation file” which tells me ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

Great user experience folks! (If you want to go out of business.)

I am tired of spending time on this.

I have been upgrading Windows since Window came out, and have been through versions 2, 2.11, 3, 3.11, 95, and 98 up till now, not to mention Excel 2 and Office 4 through XP.

This is my LAST, FINAL attempt!

After 25 years this is what you have dreamed up? No wonder Google and Apple are eating your lunch, and hitting you in the head with your lunch box!

If there isn’t a simple solution, then this is my last copy of any Microsoft product EVER.

I finally got it further along than I’ve seen before, but it still fails. This is, perhaps, criminal – stealing my money under false pretenses. Perhaps.

Something tells me a bootleg version would install just fine. But maybe I am just annoyed beyond belief. One more time tomorrow.

Then 12 strikes and yer out!

How can I upgrade to Win7 if the upgrade process is Horseshit?

How can I upgrade to Win7 if the upgrade SUCKS?
A file it couldn’t Read? or Write? It doesn’t even say. All the searches online with the error talk about the download version. Bad CD writes, etc. Perhaps MS has the same Burner issues?
I use this Laptop maybe a few times a MONTH! And I can’t even do a an upgrade like this without unexplained issues? Madness!
I am now (and have been) running a chkdsk and will reboot, copy the dvd to a folder, and try again. Oh, it finished, and I couldn’t even get a screen of what it found. Stick a ‘Pause’ statement in, guys? Sheesh.
Further along than last time. Oh, wait. A message. A VISTA message? WTF?
When they say Win7 Home PREMIUM, they really mean HOME! You have to be home for days to get it to work. PREMIUM? Not so sure on this one yet…
FREAKING NITEMARE!
It stopped when I wasn’t looking, so I rebooted. Back into Vista. WTF!!!!???
5 hours and counting on this F&%$ING moronic alleged frigging ‘update’ that this machine would have had as a freebie had I waited two weeks?
And NOW, I’m starting ALL OVER AGAIN?
WHAT THE F*&&, *&^% *&^ Balmer *&^% Gates…
I do have Ubuntu 10.10 sitting here, just waiting, and I can’t spend any more time on this clusterfrak of an alleged ‘upgrade’
Working on the 5th attempt.
Given the week at work, (longer than normal processing times, and failures to pick up 2011 data) I grow tired of finding other companies elemental screw-ups. And I have been using Windows since almost version 1. (I had a copy of 1, but it was useless, so I used the virtual one that Excel 2 needed to use on a dos machine.)
Why did I think Microsoft would get this one right? Bloody press and on-line shills, that’s why.
Since this package is opened, I probably can’t probably return this trash to the store.
What is the point on having an upgrade if it doesn’t frigging work?
Where it will most likely fail again. Then I will spend untold hours calling MS to try to figure out why a disk from Best Buy, made in Puerto Rico won’t upgrade my laptop. Laptop purchased about 2 weeks short of the free upgrade, btw, and this is now 2010, and this crap STILL doesn’t work and is a complete Cluster when trying it? No wonder no one under 30 even tries this crap!
=-=-=
Balmy Ballmer needs to go….
This nightmare – the upgrade that doesn’t work – on a machine with very little, just shows how clueless Microsoft has become.
HOURS wasted trying to upgrade a laptop I bought two weeks before Win7 shipped refuses to upgrade to Win7 from Vista. Home Premium.
I find this unconscionable,
I understand that installing an OS takes time,, but to have to make the attempt over 4 times is ridiculous.
Attempt # 5 is in progress….

Comcast strikes out

In the middle of a few bad days at work, I managed to sign up for FiOS at the roll-out (after months of digging up streets in the condo complex) and and then worked from home for 3 hours last night.

Now what did I get home to this evening?
Everything was out when I got home! How did they find out so fast about FiOS?

Good thing it wasn’t last night!

Apparently it is an area outage. The Comcast rep cannot tell me how big, how long or when it started, of course. In the old days, they would have more information available, and I am thinking MediaOne perhaps, and say that a head-end went out or something.
At least I will get a day’s credit. Wow.

One thing about an outage like this is that you get to see what software can handle the lack of connectivity. Some things used to scream about not being able to phone home every minute or two. Things seems to have improved on that score at least.

And it is obviously back up.

Timing was just so, um, Odd, though.

You can’t go home again

No, even if you can, don’t. Go Home Again
Well, I was researching a comment from Gayla, and found that I had been remiss in stating that all the Old RabidWolf site that was needed for a complete ‘Yearbook’ recreation was already available.
Trying to check, I realized that links to this 2002 event were missing. So I went on a little tour of my own copies and backups, and found it, Finally.
But, it is distressing to realize that something you wrote is now over 8 years old, and the presentation isn’t that swift, either. And what other parts are missing?
Oh well.

False naming on TV

When did the History Channel and The Learning Channel become NOT about History and NOT about Learning?

I am not happy about this. The reason we are charged untold amounts monthly to get cable is because we have so many channels. We are told that we need to pay this so that the content creators can make these programs. Nevermind that they are still loaded (20% of the total time perhaps) with commercials! Seriously? Ad revenue PLUS subscription revenue? When does enough boil down to enough already? How much does it take to stick a few of those remote cameras in a tractor-trailer cab, or a boat, or a frat house? You have the bald faced gaul to call this programming?

And then, you Cable guys have the nerve to keep increasing rates while compressing the feed so much that it can be unwatchable? Shame on you.

It is bad enough that most folks don’t even have options for non-over-the-air TV, but that you nickle and dime it to absolute death, and often blame the user for problems. Like the wrong cable connector. Well, YOU were the ones who installed the frigging thing the LAST time you were here! A pox on your house, really.

The whole thing is a scam, if you ask me.

I was bored

RabidWho

Option One

Think grisly woodcutter?

Option Two

I was bored, so I made these two logo thingies.

Let me know whether you like either of them.

I am hunkering down in Hurricane Earl mode, which should get in right about time for me to leave work tomorrow. In my two-month-old new car. Crap. Hope no trees fall on it while I am driving. And it will be covered in leaf and other debris by the time I get home. Stupid day job…

Hurricane Gloria (1985) was destructive. Totaled one of our cars by tossing a huge tree part on it.

Hurricane Bob (1991) might have been pretty bad too, but I was in Houston, so I have no idea how bad itreally was.

Ciao.

An ‘Easy’ commute

This morning’s commute was interesting.

A Friday’s trip to work is normally almost a breeze during summer. Today could have been.
First, got behind a landscaper with a big truck also towing a trailer. Wouldn’t do better than 15 – 20mph and never heard of right-on-red. [Aside: I worked with a Chinese lady who was convinced there was a LEFT-on-red.] They also decided to replace a telephone pole just past that right turn, during rush hour, so that didn’t help. The rest of the drive went very well for a change, but once I got close to work there was another construction detour. Off we go into who knows what. Well, what is a major cluster. I did finally manage to work through that mess, including the bozo who went barreling down in the on-coming lane to make the same left that I was waiting patiently to do but I was waiting for those who were trying to make the left. Moron. Yes, it was a big honking SUV. Ford Enormous, or Cadillac Escalate, or something. It is a good thing I have no weapons mounted (yet) on my car. While this idiot was stuck on the wrong side of the road because someone was coming out of it and now had to back up, I slipped through, and found a new ‘shortcut’ option. Then of course I got near work, where there are even more detours. Finally, I made it to the parking lots, which again are ‘Under Construction’, and made it past the washed out parts and turned towards the area where I normally park to find my path blocked by…

Geese.

They don’t really care that you are heading at them with almost 2 tons of machine. They MIGHT move a bit, and they WILL be put-out about it.

I have had to wait for Wild Turkeys, too, during my commute through some of Boston’s oldest suburbs.
This picture isn’t them, but…

At least it is Friday!

RabidWolf – weary, beaten down, but limping along

Well, this was fun. Not.
Last year I wrestled with changing my domain registrar of 10 years, and now I canceled the old host, and after much back and forth, at least something is back at RabidWolf dot Com!

Still deciding on whether to keep rabidwolf.com alive or not.
Probably not. All it does is cost me money and time.

SOOoooo… this might be the last we will see of RabidWolf.com after next Spring (May 2011, I think).

After the time used and a $35 penalty for early closing, I could get maybe $50 back if I closed this whole thing down in the next couple of days.

I’m betting it is better to just leave it be, play with this WordPress thing for a while, and let everything just expire. After I think over 11 years, enough already!

Record created on 18-Jun-1999!

Let me know what you think in the comments.

Ciao for now.
